Apply for dispatch

Booking your own loads costs two things: a load board subscription and your time. A dispatcher costs a percentage of every load. Which is cheaper depends on your miles, your rates and what your hours are worth. This load board vs dispatcher cost comparison puts both on one page, honestly: it starts by assuming a dispatcher gets you exactly the same rate you get yourself.

How it is calculated

Per month:

  • DIY net = miles × your rate − load board subscription − (hours a week × 52 ÷ 12 × value of an hour)
  • Dispatch net = miles × rate with dispatch − dispatch fee on that gross
  • Difference = dispatch net − DIY net
  • Break-even rate = DIY net ÷ (miles × (1 − fee)): the rate per mile dispatch has to reach to match your DIY net

Set the value of your hour to zero to compare money only. The fee tiers are our published prices: 5% for one truck with authority over 6 months, 7% while the MC is newer, 4% for fleets of two or more trucks.

Enhanced$149New owner-operators
Pro$1691 to 3 trucks, TriHaul

A worked example

EXAMPLE / ONE TRUCK, 10,000 MI A MONTHEXAMPLE
DIY: 10,000 mi × $2.40
$24,000
Board $169 + 43 h at $30
- $1,469
DIY net
$22,531
Dispatch net at $2.40, 5% fee
$22,800
Dispatch breaks even at$2.37/mi

At the same rate, the fee costs more than the board, and the hours you get back make up most of the gap. Whether it's worth it comes down to two questions: can a dispatcher add a few cents a mile on your lanes, and what will you do with the time? Some owners drive more miles; some just get home earlier.

Beyond the numbers

  • Load board subscription pricing is flat, so it costs the most per load in slow months.
  • A dispatch fee only applies when you haul. No loads, no fee.
  • Negotiation time is the hidden cost. A board finds loads; you still make every call.

For power only, the boards and programs work differently; see power only load boards and power only vs owning trailers. The full picture of what dispatch returns is in the dispatch ROI calculator, the fee on a single load in the dispatcher fee calculator, and how we run power only on power only dispatch.

Questions about this tool

01What does the DAT load board cost?

DAT One lists carrier plans at $59 a month for Standard, $149 for Enhanced, $169 for Pro, $259 for Select and $339 for Office, as checked in October 2026. Higher plans add tools like TriHaul and rate data. Prices change, so check DAT's pricing page.

02Is a load board cheaper than a dispatcher?

On the subscription alone, yes. A board costs a flat monthly price; a dispatcher costs a percentage of every load. The comparison only gets fair when you count the hours you spend searching, calling and doing paperwork, and what your rate per mile is either way.

03Do I still need a load board with a dispatcher?

Not usually. A dispatcher uses its own boards and broker contacts to find your loads. Some owner-operators keep a basic plan to check rates for themselves, which is up to you.

04Does a dispatcher get higher rates?

Sometimes, from experience, broker contacts and time to negotiate, but it isn't automatic, and we don't assume it here. The calculator starts both rates equal. It shows the rate a dispatcher would need to get for the fee to pay for itself at your numbers.
