Apply for dispatch

The linehaul pays for driving. Accessorials pay for everything else a load costs you: waiting at the dock, sitting overnight, a cancelled load, helping unload, extra stops. They are easy to earn and easy to lose. This accessorial charges calculator turns the hours and counts into invoice lines, using the rates you agreed, and lists the proof each line needs.

How it is calculated

LineFormula
Detention(hours at the dock − free time) × hourly rate, never below zero
Layoverdays × daily rate
TONUflat fee, if the load was cancelled after dispatch
Driver assisthours × hourly rate
Extra stopsstops beyond the first pickup and delivery × per-stop rate
Lumperthe receipt amount, reimbursed

All rates are yours to enter. There is no standard detention or TONU rate across the industry; they come from your rate con, your carrier packet or what you negotiate. The defaults on the tool are examples only.

A worked example

EXAMPLE / ONE GROCERY DC DELIVERYEXAMPLE
Detention: 4 h at dock, 2 h free, $50/h
$100
One extra stop at $75
$75
Lumper receipt, reimbursed
$185
Add to the invoice$360

$175 of that is earnings for time and work beyond the linehaul. The $185 lumper just gets you back to even. If any line lacks its proof, expect a short payment.

What makes an accessorial collectable

  • Agreed before the load. Detention and layover rates belong on the rate con. Verbal promises are the first to be disputed.
  • Proof at the time. In and out times written on the bill of lading and signed, lumper receipts, cancellation emails.
  • Approval when it starts. Message the broker when free time runs out, not after delivery.
  • Invoiced with the load. Extras sent weeks later are the easiest to deny.

Dock waits get their own detail in the detention pay calculator, and the dispatch fee on a load is worked out in the dispatcher fee calculator.

Power only and port moves

Power only and drayage loads add their own extras: waiting for a trailer to be found in a yard, chassis splits, pre-pulls and storage at the port. Terminal access needs its own credentials, covered in port truck pass. How those extras change what a power only load pays per mile is in power only rates per mile, and how we run those loads in power only dispatch.

Results are line items from the numbers you enter, not a guarantee any broker will pay them.

Questions about this tool

01What is TONU in trucking?

TONU means truck ordered, not used. It is a flat fee a broker or shipper pays when a load is cancelled after your truck was dispatched to it, often after you've already driven toward the pickup. The amount is agreed in advance or negotiated at cancellation; get it in writing.

02What does TONU mean in trucking for an owner-operator?

The same thing, with more at stake: one cancelled load can wipe out a day's revenue for a one-truck carrier. Ask what the TONU is before you book, and if a load is cancelled, get the cancellation and the fee confirmed by email before you leave the area.

03What is layover pay in trucking?

Layover pay compensates a carrier when a load can't be picked up or delivered on the scheduled day and the truck has to wait overnight or longer. It is usually a flat amount per day, agreed with the broker. Layover pay trucking terms vary, so have them on the rate con.

04Is a lumper fee an accessorial?

It shows up as one on the invoice, but it isn't income. A lumper is paid to unload the trailer, and the broker or shipper reimburses you for it. Keep the receipt and get the broker's agreement to reimburse before you pay.

Extras agreed before you book

Our dispatchers ask for detention, layover and TONU terms up front and keep the proof with the load. Every rate con comes to you to sign or turn down.
