Tolls rarely show up on a rate con, but they come out of your pocket on every trip through the Northeast and Midwest. A run across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey can cost more in tolls than a day of fuel savings. This truck toll cost estimator adds up the toll roads on your route and shows what a transponder saves.
How it is calculated
- Per-mile toll roads: toll = toll miles × rate per mile, for the transponder and for cash or plate.
- Flat tolls, like bridges and tunnels: the posted amount for your axle count.
- Trip tolls = the sum of all roads.
- Pass savings = cash or plate total − transponder total, and that difference × trips a month.
The Ohio Turnpike is built in with its 2026 Class 5 rates: 22.6 cents a mile with E-ZPass and 28.4 cents in cash or by card. For any other road, enter the 5-axle rates from the toll authority. Exact turnpike tolls depend on entry and exit points and sometimes direction, so the official fare calculator has the final word.
A worked example
- 241 × $0.226, E-ZPass
- $54.47
- 241 × $0.284, cash or card
- $68.44
- Difference per crossing
- $13.97
- Four crossings a month
- $56
That's one road. Add the next turnpike on the lane and the gap grows, especially where paying by plate costs far more than a transponder.
Toll notes for truckers
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Axle count | Most toll authorities price by axles or vehicle class; a 5-axle tractor-trailer pays several times a car's toll |
| Plate billing | Often the highest rate, plus fees if the bill goes unpaid |
| Rhode Island | Truck gantry tolls stopped in 2022; the state expects to resume no earlier than 2027 |
| Toll-free routes | Can save money but add miles and hours; check both before rerouting |
Using the estimate
Put tolls into your cost per mile with the trucking cost per mile calculator, and check whether a toll-free detour still makes the appointment with the truck transit time calculator. Port and intermodal drivers face their own fees at terminals; see intermodal trucking statistics and intermodal trucking insurance. Power only lanes are covered on power only dispatch.
Results are estimates from the rates and miles you enter.
